A social initiative that rebuilds war-torn communities

Mirzo Music Foundation

Founded by Gani Mirzo, the foundation was started after Gani’s visit to his homeland, Rojava, in Syrian Kurdistan. During his stay he visited several refugee camps, where he saw the power of music to rebuild. After the trip, with the collaboration of Musicians Without Borders, he started several fundraising projects to buy and collect instruments, with the aim of sending them to refugee camps. At the same time, he began to work on the idea of creating cultural spaces in refugee camps and war-torn areas. A space where “normal” meant being OK, a place for social reconstruction and an environment that helped people believe that a better future is possible.

Objectives and commitments

Within the context of the music school, the Mirzo Music Foundation initiative aims, first and foremost, to give hope to people who have suffered from the consequences of war.

The music school fosters an environment in which boys and girls can focus their interest on creating something new, different and beautiful, far removed from the reality of their everyday lives. And it offers a window of hope.

The forthcoming cultural centres in refugee camps will provide space for personal, social recovery and employment for women who have been victims of war.
